This panel is presented as part of Nexus: SF/Bay Area Black Art Week, which brings together artists, museums, galleries, cultural organizations, and creative spaces for exhibitions, talks, open studios, performances, and special events celebrating the Bay Area’s African Diasporic arts ecosystem. 

Creators, Culture, and AI: Who Benefits? expands the Nexus conversation by examining how artists and cultural communities can help shape, participate in, and benefit from the future of technology.

What does it mean to be a creator, but not a beneficiary? 

Artificial intelligence is being trained on an enormous body of human creativity, including the art, language, aesthetics, histories, and cultural expressions of communities that have often been excluded from the economic benefits of technological innovation. 

This conversation will examine how the cultural production of underrepresented communities is being used to shape AI, who currently holds power and receives value within this rapidly evolving landscape, and what must change to ensure artists and cultural communities can actively participate in and benefit from the next wave of technology. 

Rather than focusing only on the risks of AI, the panel will also explore practical opportunities for artists, cultural organizations, funders, and technology leaders to help build a more equitable future.
