It was late compared to a normal exhibition invite: artists were asked to provide work for a group show with a then unknown group of other artists. The works were to arrive wrapped, sight-unseen, except for a painting by Kate Rhoades featuring the ‘saw’ from a beloved Far Side comic. How did we get here? We (Jackie Im and myself) were going to curate a show together, then I was going to take care of it but I wanted it to be a surprise for Jackie which snowballed into it being a surprise for myself.

The day of the opening I got here early to deinstall the two previous shows and to hang this new one; now I’m writing this final bit of text before arranging the information about the works below. I’m sitting at the folding tables I used to open everything; they’re mostly empty, down to some spare wrapping and a few tools and fasteners.

Is there a theme? I hope not, not in the normal since; but there are similarities here and there. Portraiture, some humor here and there; specific, sincere voices.

Let’s spend time with these things as they spend time with each other and think about it a bit.
