XING 十字路口 — Closing Reception & Performance @ Apartment 19

For the closing of XING 十字路口, Gianna Caudillo will be joined by Graham Viegut to perform Practitioner (Public Rehearsal #1).

PRACTITIONER is a new work in continuous progress, composed by Gianna Caudillo for improvising duo. Inspired by – and named for – the wealth of dedicated and talented practitioners of creative improvisation in the Bay Area, the work seeks to bring the underbelly of musical practice into the public eye. In each presentation of Practitioner, the rehearsal is the performance, allowing the piece and its intricacies to be developed and discovered in front of an audience, in real time. By hanging the vulnerability of a rehearsal and its inherent imperfections out in the open, the common musical model of preparation → product is replaced with a philosophy central to the community of Bay Area improvisers, a tandem development of practice and product built on an inherent trust in one’s collaborators and their devotion to the craft of improvisation and musical interpretation. In this first public performance, three movements of the work will be performed by bass and percussion duo with no prior rehearsal.
