The Anatomy of Things @ Upper Market Gallery
Th Anatomy of Things brings together five California artists whose practices span painting, sculpture, textile, collage, wax, and mixed media. Though materially distinct, the works share an attention to the ways objects and images are made, altered, and accumulated over time.
Fabric is stained and stitched; paper is torn and layered; wax melts and hardens around industrial forms; sculptural surfaces are built by hand; familiar objects are rendered slowly in paint. Throughout the exhibition, traces of process remain visible. Seams, drips, fragments, irregular edges and layered surfaces become part of the finished work rather than something to be concealed.
Moving between abstraction and representation, delicacy and weight, the works resist a single visual language. Instead, connections emerge through material and gesture: a repeated mark, a weathered surface, an unexpected color, the evidence of something having been handled, transformed or preserved.
Together, the five artists consider the object not simply as a finished thing, but as a record of its making. These are the signs of life.
