Sara Gates: Without Sound @ UNTITLED vol.2

UNTITLED vol.2 is proud to announce their next solo exhibition, Without Sound, from Brooklyn based multimedia artist, Sara Gates.

Without Sound explores a “feedback loop” in which traditional materials and accelerated production processes continually inform and transform one another into new rhythms of possibility.

Traditional materials carry histories of craft, labor and touch as they encounter technologies defined by speed, automation and endless reproduction. Clay is shaped alongside the logic of the digital image. Canvas and dye meet the infinite repetitions of the screen print. Hand-printed marks exist in dialogue with systems capable of generating images in an instant.

Gates’ techniques accumulate in ways that resist a single point of origin. These iterations and this cyclical approach extend into ceramics and sculptural elements, bringing the work into three dimensional space and emphasizing the harmony between image, object and environment.

Rather than positioning the analog and digital as opposites, Gates allows them to collide, overlap and feed one another. The works become records of this exchange. Gates asks us what happens when the handmade is subjected to the speed of technology and what technology might reveal when slowed down, re-used and translated back into the physical world.

Sara Gates
is a multidisciplinary artist and collaborative printmaker whose work pushes the structural boundaries of printmaking, painting, and installation. She earned her BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 1999, a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art in London in 2004, and her MFA in Painting from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn in 2006.

In 2006, Gates founded Kingsland Editions, a premier Brooklyn-based print studio dedicated to experimental printmaking and collaborative fine art publishing. As a master printer, she has partnered with a diverse roster of contemporary artists to realize highly ambitious, limited-edition works that bridge the gap between traditional techniques and modern innovation. Alongside her collaborative practice, Gates maintains a rigorous, evolving solo studio practice that explores the intersections of form, surface, and medium.  Both her collaborative and personal work has been exhibited and collected by numerous galleries and museums.
