Open Net Series: Amy Keefer @ Et al.
“ Join me next Saturday, September 5th from 1:00-3:30 PM for a Wearable Art Performance and Net Making Demonstration!
I will be wearing my fishnets, embroidered with the pixelated faces of villains whose power I have been slowly diminishing over the course of this project.
I will also demonstrate how to make nets by hand and fill in the spaces in netted fabric, a lacemaking technique called Lacis or Filet!
Bring your ideas for other villains that should be captured in my web.
We can talk about the trauma we store in our bodies and how we manage to release it.
The day that Roe vs. Wade was overturned in 2022, I began to weave the pixelated portraits of sexual offenders and white male supremacists into a pair of vintage fishnet stockings. This process has been a meditation on resistance as well as a tool for imagining a more autonomous existence. Years have passed while I worked in solitude on these stockings, as the politicians, CEOs, and individuals from my personal life who deserve to be captured are slowly revealed. When justice fails, artists must affect change with the skills and materials at hand.”
