Nature Boundary @ Headlands Center for the Arts
A panel conversation with artists Anja Ulfeldt and Carla Fisher Schwartz, moderated by Chance Cutrano and Julianna Heller
The talk will begin at 2 PM followed by a reception
This conversation brings together artists Carla Fisher Schwartz and Anja Ulfeldt, with moderation by Bay Area-based climate and conservation leader Chance Cutrano and Prospect Art 2025 curatorial fellow Julianna Heller, to consider how natural landscapes are translated between physical environments and digital space, and how these shifts shape our understanding of nature. Grounded in the ecological context of the Bay Area, the discussion reflects on how tools such as mapping and 3D scanning intersect with lived environmental conditions, impacts, and responsibilities.

About In Flux
What develops when artists inhabit the space between established strategies and emerging technologies? Increasingly, artistic practice operates across shifting conditions, including analog and digital, handmade and algorithmic, and physical and virtual. In Flux is a four part series of artist driven conversations organized and curated by 2025 Curatorial Fellow Julianna Heller, exploring how contemporary artists navigate and work within this layered reality. The series will be released online in fall 2025.
Drawing on Donna Haraway’s A Cyborg Manifesto, a foundational text for thinking about hybridity, the program considers what emerges through transgressed boundaries and unexpected fusions. Rather than rejecting technological change or embracing it uncritically, the artists engage processes of translation across forms, attending to what is lost and what becomes possible in these shifts.
Across sculpture, video, performance, and image making, the participating artists explore hybrid conditions, whether material, conceptual, or perceptual. If something is always lost in crossing between modalities, what new forms might that loss make possible?
