Currently accepted theories of the universe center around the idea of a singularity – a dense agglomeration of matter and energy – that in a spontaneous moment of unbridled expansion gave rise to everything we see (and don’t) and know (or don’t). New theories call into question the rationality of such a theory, as it stands directly at odds with the maxim that neither matter nor energy can ever be created or destroyed. This conundrum has inspired a more cyclical theory of the universe, in which the same matter and energy that gave rise to our present universe came from a previous universe.
Each artist’s response to their lived experiences – via the multitude of conscious and subconscious creative influences – constitutes a collaboration across space and time. The work thus shared did not emerge spontaneously. Rather, it was grown, nurtured in the multifaceted internal spaces we each hold: our own little sliver of the universe, which ever and always stands in relation to all the other overlapping sections. Taken together, the works elaborate on a multifaceted vision of our shared reality, with each work (or series of works) inviting closer observation of experiences or perspectives that may be familiar and relatable, totally alien, or somewhere in between.
The viewer, as an active participant, is invited along a journey in which the universal cycles are translated into more familiar, personal terms: those of the relational cycles we all experience in our interactions with others, as well as our interactions with the systems and structural frameworks within which we live.
The artists and designers included in this presentation were brought together by their shared representation by Helene Agency & Creative Buro. From painting and sculpture, to furniture and florals, to performance of the musical and conceptual variety, to community-building and place-making – each contributor brings their particular viewpoint to light through rigorous study of their motivations, interests, and craft. Each work invites visitors to experience the creator’s slice of reality: a look through their lens.
The work is arranged in a suggested experiential sequence, and is best appreciated in smaller groups.
