Leaving out the Luminaries — Lecture & Communal Meal @ The Wattis Institute

Learn about the role of food and community within artistic practice and arts education with David Silver, author of The Farm at Black Mountain College and Professor at the University of San Francisco.

Black Mountain College (BMC) was a wellspring of 20th-century creativity. From its founding in 1933 to its collapse in 1956, the small liberal arts school in rural North Carolina attracted a remarkable number of famous and soon-to-be famous artists, writers and visionaries including Anni and Josef Albers, Ruth Asawa, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Buckminster Fuller, Charles Olson and M.C. Richards. This talk sets aside these luminaries and instead follows renegade students, faculty, and farmers as they establish a campus farm in the 1930s, build a better farm in the 1940s, and watch it all collapse in the 1950s.

This program is co-organized with CCA Humanities and Sciences, Interdisciplinary Studio, and Susanne Cockrell (CCA Faculty) for two of her classes, Digging in the World and FOOD. Join Susanne's class after this talk for a community SOUP event.

Special thanks to our in-kind sponsors Semifreddi's and Whole Foods Market.
