In 1914, the Marconi Corporation of America constructed a high-power radio transmitting station on the rolling pasture-cliffs of Bolinas, California. The main building contained two 300kW spark-gap transmitters that vibrated the antenna outside, a 600ft by 2700ft array suspended by multiple 325ft masts. It was paired with a receiving station in the town of Marshall, 18 miles north, whose operation ended permanently at the onset of the Pacific Theater. In 1976, the transmitting station was turned into "a center for healing ourselves and the earth," called Commonweal. Four years later, the defunct receiving station in Marshall was purchased by the wellness cult Synanon and turned into a compound for their members.
In 1961, the 666th Radar Squadron based on the west peak of Mt. Tamalpais was assigned to SAGE, a large centralized computer network meant to manage the NORAD response to an air attack. The west peak was populated with various long-range radars over the following years, including two radomes. Three years later, the RAND Corporation proposed to DARPA the idea of decentralized "communications networks" as a way of addressing SAGE's "centralization" vulnerability. DARPA hired Stanford Research Institute to develop this into ARPANET, the internet precursor.
In 1977, the Defense Intelligence Agency hired Stanford Research Institute to continue their investigation into the phenomena of remote viewing, the ability to perceive details of a person, place, or object through extrasensory perception. The project was terminated in 1995 and declassified later that year, with additional documents becoming publicly available in 2017. To date, there are over 90,000 pages of writings and drawings on the visions research subjects would see during remote viewing sessions.
This installation will be followed by a show at Bass and Reiner in Summer 2027 curated by DJ Meisner, featuring Abby Banks, Connor Tomaka, and Nicholas Johannes Valvur.
DJ Meisner (b. 1997, San Francisco) is an artist making mixed media work about conspiracy theories, spiritual experience, and being online. He works with the mediums of photography, painting, drawing, and sculpture. DJ is also a facilitator of the DNR Bookclub, a biweekly reading group with 50+ members held in the arts nonprofit Do Not Research Discord. Over the past few years, he has made work about Point Reyes National Seashore, MKULTRA, and Project Stargate, the Defense Intelligence Agency's project studying astral projection and out-of-body experience.
