시( )nawi( )fugue (an improvisation, an offering, a reading) @ BAMPFA

  • BAMPFA 2155 Center Street Berkeley, CA, 94720 United States (map)

Artist Jesse Chun presents the inaugural activation of her new performance series 시(  )nawi(  )fugue. A collective, improvisational reading of her drawing installation, 시: concrete poem, stanza (for all the uninherited and inherited time travelers that hum through the slivers), on view in Multiple Offerings, the performance invokes artistic matriarchs and cultivates spiritual kinship across generations through an engagement with sound, music, open translation, and spoken word. Communing with the diasporic kinship and the polyvocal ethos of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s legacy, and drawing from the memories of Chun's late grandmother Jeong Gak Haeng's Korean folk dance and music practice, Chun reimagines sinawi (시나위), a Korean folk and shamanic ritual music rooted in improvisation, and the polyphonic classical genre of the fugue. 시(  )nawi(  )fugue reimagines both forms in an interconnected act of speaking together across time and place.

Jesse Chun’s moving images, concrete poems, scores, and activations intimately unravel the dominant compositions of language and legibility, invoking alternate semiotics and cosmologies of meaning, time, transmission, and infinitude. Chun's work has been presented internationally in a solo survey exhibition for the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale; Commonwealth and Council, Los Angeles; SculptureCenter, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, among others.
