Suzanne Jackson - What Is Love @ SFMOMA

  • SFMOMA 151 3rd Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

"I wanted to paint beauty, even though that was a dirty word," artist Suzanne Jackson told Art in America in 2023. From ethereal abstractions and lyrical figures to the hot chroma of free-hanging forms edging toward sculpture, Suzanne Jackson's late career revival caps the six-decade practice of the historic Black artist, as well as dancer, poet, theater designer, and ardent supporter of other artists. Organized chronologically, her first major retrospective includes work from her pioneering Los Angeles exhibition space, Gallery 32, along with ephemera, designs, and costumes from her many roles.
