The fifth of seven SHACK15 Artist Fellow showcases with artist Keith Boadwee
Join us for an evening that begins with a presentation by artist Keith Boadwee, followed by a conversation with writer, curator, and educator Glen Helfand. Working across painting, drawing, collage, and photography, Boadwee investigates the body through actionism, expressionism, and queer aesthetics. His work is at once provocative and playful—blending humor, sexuality, and abjection into a singular visual language.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Keith Boadwee studied at the University of California at Los Angeles in the late 80’s where he worked with Paul McCarthy and Chris Burden. Boadwee produces paintings, drawings, collages and photos that explore his fascination with the body, actionism, expressionism, sex, queer aesthetics, humor, and abjection. His works have been reviewed in publications that include Artforum, Art in America, The Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the New Yorker and Flash Art. Boadwee has exhibited at The New Museum, MOMA PS1, Salzburger Kunstverein,Dittrich & Schlectriem, Berlin, Smallville, Neuchatel, Switzerland, Anton Kern Gallery, New York, Shoot The Lobster, New York, The Pit, Los Angeles and Climate Control, San Francisco. In 2022, Nicole Eisenman organized an exhibition of Boadwee’s drawing for The Flag Foundation, New York. In 2017, Atelier 34Zero Muzeum in Brussels, Belgium mounted a survey of Boadwee’s work along with a new group of his “Poppy Paintings”. OTP Copenhagen will present a new group of Boadwee’s paintings June/July, 2026. Mr. Boadwee earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1989 and his Master’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001.
ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Glen Helfand is a writer, critic, curator and educator. He’s written for Artforum, The Guardian, Aperture, and ArtBae, among others. Helfand is Professor in the Grad Fine Arts Program at California College of the Arts.
