Sarah McCarthy Grimm - Waves of Remembrance @ Upper Market Gallery

  • Upper Market Gallery 4690 18th Street San Francisco, CA, 94114 United States (map)

UPPER MARKET GALLERY is pleased to present WAVES OF REMEMBRANCE, a multidisciplinary solo showcase by Sarah McCarthy Grimm, an Outer Sunset artist. The show is an invitation to swim into memory, into waves that surge forward and dissolve just as quickly, waves that carry us beyond logic into perpetual presence, flowing with the currents of destiny. Grimm’s process is an alchemical one: she intentionally transforms grief and other complex emotions into potent energy from which to create a soothing visual experience. She fuels her internal wellspring through daily plunges at Ocean Beach and exploring coastal landscapes near and far.

Some of these landscapes are depicted in film photographs, taken either with her Mamiya C220 or with her Mamiya RB67, both antique cameras that imprint the moment directly onto physical film. She favors the C220 because the twin lens empowers her to compose the image with a completely new perspective. She presents the photograph as purely as possible, not at all cropped or altered digitally, merging currents past and present. For Grimm, the essence of coastal landscapes reflects the oceanic quality within each of us, offering a direct experience of reality’s fluidity.

In her paintings on canvas and paper, the artist moves beyond analytical thought so that her abstractions arise from an intuitive thread of the interconnected web created by all living beings. Whether working with acrylics directly on canvas, an American French Press to create monotypes, or rain to make a cyanotype, she collaborates with chance as a way to reach beyond the limited human framework. In all her work, the artist offers a respite from the chaos of the world, coaxing the noisy mind into a moment of contemplative spaciousness.
