Jacob Li Rosenberg: Home Field Advantage @ Dream Farm Commons

In Home Field Advantage, artist Jacob Li Rosenberg navigates Chinatowns that are real and imagined, abstract and tangible, past, present, and future. Li Rosenberg’s Chinatowns are places steeped in his family’s footsteps—the gestures and experiences of ancestors, the accumulation of objects and people, and inherited rituals that connect us to those who came before us. Many of the Chinese immigrants who followed to San Francisco and Chinatowns across the country in those early years came from a single port city in Guangdong province: Toisan, also the city from where Li Rosenberg’s ancestors and their dialects originate. The artist’s lineage, from sewing factories to laundries, calls him to monumentalize Chinatowns across the United States, from the tiny apartment on Canal Street where his mom and great-grandparents lived in New York City, to the grocery stores where his grandparents shopped for fruit in the Inner Richmond, to paying visit to the ancestors at the Chinese cemeteries in Brooklyn and Colma, to the baseball green he ran on as a kid growing up in Wisconsin. Li Rosenberg’s Chinatown is a reclamation and an invention, a feeling to be encapsulated, replicated, and reimagined, a community to grow expansively with and through.

ABOUT THE ARTISTJacob Li Rosenberg is a Wisconsin-born, multi-media artist and caregiver of Chinese and Jewish heritage. He holds a BA in Art Practice and Sociology from UC Berkeley. Jacob currently lives and works in his mother’s hometown of San Francisco.Rooted in spatial awareness and historical inquiry, Jacob’s practice interweaves personal narrative with an exploration of converging cultural identities. His work engages themes of place, familial lore, tradition, language, labor, archives, and generational care. Trained as a photographer, Jacob is a conceptual artist who has spent recent years creating collaged works that integrate cyanotype, screenprint, and found/fabricated objects.
