Alex Kanevsky: Field Trip @ Dolby Chadwick Gallery

  • Dolby Chadwick Gallery 210 Post Street San Francisco, CA, 94108 United States (map)

Dolby Chadwick Gallery is thrilled to present Field Trip, an exhibition by artist Alex Kanevsky, a figurative painter who, in the words of writer John Yau, "belongs to no school, follows no tendency, and has neither a signature style nor a recurring topic." By rejecting familiar stylistic devices—such as surrealist dreamscapes, expressionist distortions, and impressionist views—he has developed a unique approach to figuration. The result is an oeuvre of diverse compositions, achieved by Kanevsky's remarkable ability to transform his inescapable precariousness into paintings of unrivaled visual eloquence.

Kanevsky's paintings both mark the journey of his unfolding life and transcend his own array of inspirations. In his compositions the subject and the background often blur and melt into each other; bodies appear fractured, partially formed, either obscured by a flurry of colors or dissolving into darkness; the landscapes expand limitless and even in scenes that seem to take place inside, the visual field is undivided, open-ended as if confined by the borders of the painted surface rather than structured by the order of things inside. It’s a world full of shifting light, color, and movement.
